Back in March, Oscar ‘Mixwell’ Cañellas joined G2 Esports for a trial period as we were trying out a new team structure with Nathan ‘NBK-’ Schmitt as the in-game leader. Both the players and the organization knew that such a trial, with actively ongoing online and offline tournaments will be a very demanding task but we decided to put our best efforts into it together. While now we see that added pressure, despite great collective motivation was difficult to cope with, we are still certain that this decision has brought a lot of new knowledge and overall improvements to all of us. We’re taking this trial as a learning experience to ensure we build a winning team moving forward. While we are still in decision-making process regarding the long-term CS:GO line-up to compete under the G2 flag, we are allowing Mixwell to explore other options.
Here is the breakdown of the situation by the team’s coach and manager Jerome ‘NiaK’ Sudries:
“The decision-making process to define the final line-up that will represent G2 Esports moving forward has started. While this occurs, we wish to give Oscar the opportunity to explore any options on the market.
It is important for us to make it clear that Oscar has been an incredible teammate ever since he joined us for a trial and in a particular context which has undoubtedly added difficulties for him to show his full potential. His maturity, his work ethic but also his ability to adapt to a new role and all of that in a language that he hasn’t practiced for years makes Oscar a player of a rare value in CS:GO. We have no doubts that he will find success in the upcoming years, regardless whether he ends up in G2’s final lineup or not.”
For those of you who are out of the loop, here’s a quick recap of the situation so far:
Back in March the team had different visions of how they could be improving. After speaking to each member individually and all of them together, it was agreed that NBK- would take the lead. During previous talks, shox had suggested a more drastic team change and we were looking to explore more moderate options before implementing any major roster changes. The discussions resulted in Richard ‘shox’ Papillon being benched while he underwent wrist surgery and team coach Edouard ‘SmithZz’ Dubourdeaux stepping down from his coach position to return to practice and improve as a player. Oscar ‘Mixwell’ Cañellas then joined as a trial member for the next couple of months.
We are looking forward to attending the ECS Season 5 Finals in London with an updated roster. Talks are still ongoing and we will be ready to share more information with you in the near future. Finally, we would like to give a huge shout out to the G2 army around the world, your support is everything to us. Stay tuned to our Website and Social Media channels for more information!
