Defying the odds, exceeding expectations, and proving that the gap truly is closing, our League of Legends team accomplished incredible things during their 2018 Worlds campaign in Korea. Entering the tournament as Europe’s third seed, they had much to prove to both themselves and the world. Though they exited the tournament this past weekend, they did so as a Top 4 team in the world, proving their strength and caliber as a team and accomplishing an organisation first of emerging from the Group Stage of the World Championship.
Their campaign began in the capital of esports, Seoul, where our team defeated Ascension Gaming and SuperMassive eSports in two best-of-1s and a tiebreaker to claim the top spot in their group. From there, they faced off against Infinity Esports in a best-of-5, taking them down in a strong 3-1 performance and securing their place in the Group Stage. The Championship then moved to Busan, where the boys joined a group with Flash Wolves, Phong Vũ Buffalo, and tournament favourites Afreeca Freecs. Through their incredible work and resilience, they achieved a 3-3 record in the group and defeated Flash Wolves in the tiebreaker to earn a place in the quarterfinals. In doing so, they made G2 Esports’ history in being the the first team to qualify for the World Championship quarterfinals.
Their success didn’t end there though. Drawing against Chinese powerhouse and tournament favourites Royal Never Give Up, the team faced a tough opponent, led by legendary AD Carry and star player, Uzi. Unfazed, our boys overcame the challenge in an epic 3-2 series, defeating the tournament favourites and proceeding to the semifinals in Gwangju to face the other Chinese contender, Invictus Gaming. Despite a hard fought battle and their best attempts, Invictus Gaming proved unstoppable and our Worlds 2018 journey came to a close.
We are incredibly proud of the team’s accomplishments and wish to congratulate Wunder, Jankos, Perkz, Hjarnan, Wadid, Sacre, GrabbZ, Duffman, and Cedric for their hard work and achievements throughout the tournament. With your Top 4 Worlds finish, you have not only made G2 Esports history, but done us and the entire European region incredibly proud.
In case you missed it, we partnered with Logitech G to chronicle our team’s Worlds 2018 run in our ‘G2 at Worlds’ series, the final episode of which has been released today. You can watch the full series, including the latest episode in the playlist below.
