As we are preparing for the changes and new challenges of 2018, G2 Esports and our League of Legends Head Coach Joey ‘YoungBuck’ Steltenpool have amicably decided to have Joey move to a free agent position and explore his options.
We had an incredibly tough group at Worlds, but we can say with absolute confidence that our players and staff worked hard and did everything they could in their power to make playoffs. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough this time around, but we are still super proud. We had an incredible and historic run with this lineup dominating the European region with back-to-back Championship wins, plus second places at IEM and MSI, and we have no intention of stopping now.
We will forever remain grateful to the players, staff and Joey in particular, for their dedication, hard work and accomplishments as Samurai in G2. Regardless of what the future holds and how our lineup will look for the next season, our ambition to continue our European legacy and strive for greatness on the international stage remains untouched. We will be back and we are hungrier than ever.
Joey ‘YoungBuck’ Steltenpool statement:
“I am extremely grateful for the time I’ve spent in G2 and the journey it has taken me on. In the last 2 years I’ve had the luxury of being surrounded by the best players, assistant-coaches, owner and of course staff in the G2 organisation which has helped me grow a lot as a coach and more importantly as a person. While the journey has been an amazing one so far, I want to look into every option for the upcoming season before I make any decisions for my future. With that in mind I am declaring my free agency.”

G2 Esports CEO Carlos ‘ocelote’ Rodriguez statement:
“When Joey joined us, he wasn’t the seasoned coach he is today. We went through an immense learning process together and built a true legacy. His input over the course of two years has been a vital part of our team’s success. I am grateful for our time together and will always have him close to my heart no matter the circumstances. We have come to an agreement with Joey that it is in our best interest to delay any commitments at this point.”
