What an incredible journey it was! After a long season, Thijs “Thijs” Molendijk secured his second European title and qualified for the World Championship, at BlizzCon, so, for the second year in a row, becoming only the second player in the world so far to achieve that feat, after Hakjun “Kranich” Baek.
It was not an easy task, however: with players like Mateusz “Loyan” Roszkowski, Esteban “AKAWonder” Serrano and Simon “Crane333” Raunholst also in attendance, the field was stacked. The grand final ended up being a test of wits, with Thijs outdoing Alexey “Iner” Bakumenko of Russia in a seven-game thriller against in the final to secure the title.
Qualifying for back-to-back World Championships is no small feat, and it confirms Thijs’ credentials as one of the most dominant players in the Hearthstone scene. At BlizzCon, the Dutchman will be hoping to go even further than last year, when he was eliminated in the semi-finals by eventual champion Sebastian “Ostkaka” Engwall.
